I want to talk about carbohydrates and when to eat them and when to not eat them. When I sit down with a new client, the biggest thing I see usually is that people just consume way too many carbohydrates. With carbohydrates, there’s two type of carbohydrates. Simple carbs and complex carbs. Simple carbs, they’re all your junk food type of carbs, so that’s all your lollies, your chocolate, your cakes and stuff like that.
As a given, if you want to lose weight, you literally just have to cut those things out. They’re not healthy, they’re going to make you put on weight. They’re going to make you lethargic. They’re going to make you tired. You’re going to lack performance and you’re going to look bad.
The other type of carbohydrates is complex carbohydrates and there’s two types there. There’s starchy and there’s fibrous. With your starchy carbohydrates, we’re talking about bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and stuff like that. The fibrous carbohydrates we’re talking about all your veggies there. Most people do consume way too much bread, rice and pasta, so what they need to do is first they need to cut down those but they don’t need to eliminate them completely. What they need to do is they need eat them after a workout.
After you’ve worked out, you deplete all your muscle of their sugar stores so you need to get that energy back in there, back in your muscles to aide in recovery. That’s a perfect time to be eating your brown rice or your whole meal pasta or your sweet potato or your white potatoes.
When you’re not working out, so all those other times of day where you’re not expending a lot of energy, we want to have quite low energy foods which is going to be all your fibrous carbohydrates. It’s going to be all your veggies, so your spinach, your broccoli, your cauliflower. They should make up the majority of your day when you’re not working out, and then when you are working out, that’s when you want to have all your starchy carbohydrates like your brown rice, your sweet potato and your whole meal pasta and stuff like that.
Just an overview if you want to lose weight. First you need to get rid of all the simple processed carbohydrates, so that’s all your lollies, chocolates, cakes. They’re just not going to help you in any situation. They’re going to make you fat, they’re going to make you flat and they’re going to make you lethargic. Then with your starchy carbohydrates, your bread, rice, pasta, we want to be eating those after a workout. The rest of the day you want to be sticking with your fibrous carbohydrates. That’s your broccoli, your spinach, your cauliflower. All those sorts of things.
